I wish to propose something which will be fair and just to the majority. The IIMs have announced today that a commitee has been set up to examine the errors in the paper and suggest the remedy in two weeks time. Till such time the evaluation will not take place.( Times of India 21 Nov). The errors in the paper are worth 12 marks....8 marks in 444 series and 4 marks in others. 444 series test takers form 25% of the 1.91 lacs. The IIMs may come out with the following remedies:-1. Ignore for evaluation all questions with error.2. Award 4 marks to any candidate who has attempted the 'error' ques.3. Devise a method to award marks as per the candidates overall performance - depending on the candidates strike rate or accuracy.4. Scrap the paper and order a re- test like after CAT 2003.Options 1,2 and 3 are face saving measures, which if adopted by the IIMs, will be flawed from the word go. I say this because, firstly, no methodology of awarding marks can compensate for the Time lost in tring to attempt the error ridden ques. Whether I want to spend 2 minutes on a particula ques or 10 minutes is my decision. Secondly, considering that atleast 50% of the junta admitted into the IIMs have aced one or two sections and scraped past the cutoff in the third section(safe assumption I think). The award of marks as per options 1,2 and 3 above will result in an error 'swing' of at least 15% in the overall marks. That is because minimum + or - 4 marks swing in each sec ( amounting to + - 8 marks) out of the total cutoff of about 60 marks (VA and Quant combined cutoff). This would result in at least 15% students (out of the 50% who scrape cutoff) either making it to the IIMs or not. OUT of 1200 seats, 50% is 600. 15% of 600 is 90...I got this maths right So at least 90 students admitted will be not entirely by merit..but by some 'Duckworth-Lewis' formula of IIMs. That means the whole exercise of considering CAT score, Gd PI performance, educational background and work-ex will become an exercise in futility. The IIMs may as well have resorted to a lucky draw. The three error ridden ques are not inconsequential, neither can they be corrected by any formula. What is at stake is the candidature of 90 odd students( whether they 'deserved' to get into the IIMs is open to aspertions). And, of course, the very credibility of IIMs, and their 'image' and brand name, is at stake. In view of the aforesaid I propose that CAT 2006 should be scrapped and a re-test ordered. I am not saying this because I want a retest. It follows from a logical analysis of the issue. Don't we all want the selection process to be fair, transparent and just? May every candidate admitted into the IIMs be on his abilities, and not on some pseudo-random formula generated to compensate for the"errors". And needless to say, the professor who was in charge of the final proof reading of the paper should be sacked.By proposing the above opinions, many guys who have done well will fell let down. But then two wrongs don't make a right. Your views/
